Getting around in Downtown San Diego

San Diego is movin and shakin!  If you don't enjoy walking there are all sorts of fun ways to get around in Downtown San Diego.  San Diego has just been awarded a $500,000 state grant to install 41 San Diego electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city.  With over 7000 San Diego residents owning electric cars, we are the highest per-capital rate in California.
How about a high rise San Diego gondola ride?  It could become a reality if a study finds it to be cost effective.  There is strong support for a request to spend $75,000 in county Neighborhood Reinvestment Program money to hire a consultant to study the aerial gondola.  Discussions include attaching it to the Interstate 805 bridge.  One scenario envisions a downtown connection to Balboa Park.  It would have a number of units and be an effective means of transportation.

The Downtown San Diego bike loop has been unveiled.  It's a 7 mile downtown bike loop meant to connect cyclists with top destinations from Balboa Park to the Gaslamp Quarter.  The loop was created almost entirely with painted markers.  it includes one short new stretch of dedicated bike lanes in Bankers Hill.  The rest of the loop consists of standard roadway.  The cost was $70,000 in labor and materials.  It was a lower cost project that has a huge impact on the neighborhoods and they we will be doing a lot more, said Kevin Faulconer, Mayor.  The route includes Little Italy, Waterfront Park, Midway, Seaport Village, Petco Park, The new Library, and Balboa Park.  This program will include a new bike share project with more than 180 bike rental stations across the city.

On the table and being discussed is a study of an enclosed bike and
San Diego pedestrian tube beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.  Another $75,000 grant has been secured to study the feasibility.

And what about our great airport, located within walking distance.  They are now giving travelers a quiet escape amid the bustle with a new San Diego Airport Meditation room in Terminal 2.  Located behind the security gates and removed from the bustle of the rest of the terminal, the new room allows passengers to pray, read or meditate in a quiet space.  It opened to the public last week.  It is adorned with an altar, plain wooden benches and 6 glass panels mimicking an ocean setting.  Cost was just over $200,000 paid by airport user fees.
